I can’t remember how I first heard of MediCinema, but once I had and had learnt what the charity did I was keen to arrange a visit.
In a nutshell MediCinema bring the joy of the cinema to the hospital by building, installing and running a very unique type of cinema.
The cinema experience is one you don’t associate with sick youngsters and\or adults in hospital but the charity’s slogan of ‘Feel better with Film’ sums up the main objective – to transport those needing long and\or prolonged hospital stays away from clinical wards and treatments to the magical world of films.
The MediCinema we visited that was within The Chelsea & Westminster Hospital had room not just for wheelchairs, but beds too – which is just incredible. And each of MediCinema’s screens has specific nurses to administer drugs and look after the patients lucky enough to be selected to attend a screening.
The charity has seven cinemas and plans to increase that number at locations up and down the country. And with stats and figures as follows…
88% think Medicinema can help support recovery
84% think the positive benefits of MediCinema have a lasting effect
91% MediCinema helped people to cope & support their mental health
85% MediCinema enriched people’s quality of life
99% MediCinema makes a positive difference to the hospital experience
94% The MediCinema experience helps people feel less isolated
93% The MediCinema experience reduces stress & anxiety
55% attending the MediCinema helps reduce pain
That can only be a good thing. The features and aesthetics of each cinema are replicated at each of the sites, with seasonal films being shown throughout the year.
Although my colleague and I didn’t stay for the Halloween screening of Young Frankenstein we left impressed and keen to support MediCinema’s great work in ways other than the two donation made, and are excited to work with and help MediCinema where we can.
